The Condor Environmental Group has lodged a complaint with the Court of Almería, gross negligence and damage to public health, against the Company Sevillana de Electricidad, the state which is the Power Plant of the Zapillo, in Almeria, which is emitting to the environment pollution of asbestos.
The most common serious diseases related to asbestos are asbestosis (bronchopulmonary disorders), primary lung cancer and mesothelioma (malignant tumor).
The Thermal Power Company in the area of Seville The Zapillo, is in ruins and have been abandoned, which is causing some of its facilities and particularly of asbestos thermal insulation are breaking down and by wind and rain are scattered all around, highly populated areas like New Almería, El Zapillo, Five hundred homes, Cortijo Grande, etc..
The complaints of the ecological group based Condor legally R. D. 363/95 including asbestos in the harmonized list contained in Annex 1 and classified as toxic and carcinogenic of category 1 (a category which included substances known to be carcinogenic to humans. Is sufficient evidence to establish the existence of a cause / effect relationship between human exposure to a substance and the development of cancer)? And the R. D. 952/97 states that the asbestos waste is classified as hazardous waste.
Condor Environmentalists are also based on the prestigious organization ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists), U.S., points to asbestos as a confirmed carcinogen for humans.
Condor also report the case to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office also has reported administratively to the various authorities with responsibilities in this matter: Prefectures (Central Government), Government Office (Andalusian Government), City of Almeria Labour Inspectorate and Ministry of Environment, Health, Employment and Technological Development.
